Fix Gun Checks
It’s time to close the gaps in federal law that allow felons, seriously mentally ill, domestic abusers and other dangerous people to get their hands on guns.
Call your members of Congress and urge them to co-sponsor legislation to require background checks for all gun sales. Enter your information on the right and we’ll give you a call and connect you to your senators and representative.
Criminal background checks have already blocked more than 2 million gun sales to potentially dangerous people. But under current law, a criminal can either choose to go to a licensed dealer – where background checks are required – and be prohibited from buying a firearm, or they can go online, to a gun show, or an alley and buy a gun from a private seller that isn’t required to run one.
Any legislation to fix gun checks would do two things:
- Require a criminal background check for all gun sales.
- Get all the names of people prohibited from buying guns into the background check system.
This common sense reform is supported by over 91 percent of voters, including 86 percent of NRA members.
It’s time to end gun sales with no background check or questions asked. Please call Congress today.
The 2011 Fix Gun Checks Campaign
Following the mass shooting in Tucson in January 2011, Mayors Against Illegal Guns launched a nationwide tour to build support for fixing the broken background check system. Watch the tour highlight video and the petition delivery video.
